This Pianist Aims to Give Back to the Community—Support Them on Sunday
The 6 Piano Project will be a collaboration between Nathan Felix and Sawyer Yards in Houston. For this event, Felix will collect donated and for-sale pianos and restore them. Then, on May 4th, 2019, the Houston community will be invited to enjoy an evening of music performed on these restored pianos. Be part of this incredible project this Saturday at Sawyer Yards.
After living in Los Angeles, Felix realized the importance and value of the arts in community integration. With that in mind, he took to creating a performance that would not only involve the community, but benefit it as well. The idea is to collect six pianos that are considered “trash” to some and convert them into “treasures” for others. The restored pianos will be used in a night of performances by Houston artists, and concluding with Felix’s compositions specifically written for six pianos. During this performance, the audience will sit in the middle of the space while each piano is strategically positioned along the walls, creating a surround sound experience.
Felix introduced the 6 Piano Project concert series in the Rundberg neighborhood of North Austin in November 2015 and has since reproduced the project in San Antonio (2016), Barcelona (2017) and Melbourne (2017). Felix hopes this ongoing project will contribute to the community by providing resources for a new generation of artists/musicians.
Sawyer Yards is a creative campus spanning 55+ acres of industrial warehouses in Houston’s Historic First Ward neighborhood. In addition to major art openings and recurring markets, Sawyer Yards regularly hosts public programs in partnership with the Washington Avenue Arts District, a state-recognized cultural district boasting the largest population of working artists in the country.
Help Nathan Felix make a difference in the community when you attend this event on Saturday. Admission is donation-based. Proceeds from the event assist in the restoration and transportation of pianos to lower income schools in Harris County.
